Backstory
His father was also a sailor, and he learned everything he knows from his father. As a young sailor, he got into a bad accident on board, leaving him with a large scar across his face. He’s been around and on boats for as long as he can remember; he can’t imagine any other life than that of a sailor. However, he was willing to give it all up when he became romantically involved with Yevdokiya. Before he could ask her father for her and, both disappeared without a trace. Over the years, he’s slowly come to terms with the betrayal and accepted that he may never know if she truly loved him.
Family and Relationships
Yevdokiya Lebedev: Andrey’s ex-fiancée. She came from a higher social standing than him, but he was madly in love with her and thought she felt the same. He was fully prepared to give up sailing to try and win her father’s approval, but before he could officially propose, she and her father disappeared without leaving a note. Recovering from that betrayal took him years.
Zoya: Andrey’s pet cat. He got her when she was just a kitten, but she died a year or two before the voyage.
Nikolai: Over the course of the voyage, Andrey starts seeing them as less of an annoyance and more of a little brother.
Winston: Reminds Andrey of a younger version of him.
